An unused car’s records often end up in several places: a glovebox, filing cabinet, email inbox or an old folder of workshop invoices. Sorting them before an enquiry can make the vehicle easier to describe. Ask the buyer which documents it actually needs rather than sending every personal record you find.
Start with identification
Match the make, model and year to the vehicle. If a document describes another car you previously owned, keep it separate. Ask how the buyer wants the vehicle identifier provided and use its appropriate verification process.
Registration information and legal ownership are different matters. The South Australian Driver’s Handbook notes that registered ownership does not prove legal ownership. Explain your circumstances and ask what evidence is required.
Sort condition records
Separate service invoices, repair estimates and parts receipts. Label an estimate as proposed work rather than a completed repair. If an invoice shows a diagnosis, quote the relevant information accurately without claiming it establishes the car’s present condition years later.
Records can clarify an enquiry, but they do not guarantee a higher offer. Their usefulness depends on what they establish about this particular vehicle.
Keep private information private
Avoid including unrelated bank details or personal correspondence in a quote message. Provide only relevant information through the buyer’s requested process. Keep your original documents and confirm which copies are needed.
If records are missing, say so early. Do not invent a service history or assume one particular paper is the only way to verify a sale. Ask the buyer and Service SA about the requirements applying to your situation.
Prepare the handover folder
Keep the agreed vehicle description, included parts list and collection confirmation together. Add the transaction receipt after handover and complete any current registration or disposal steps that apply.
Use this preparation for cash for old cars or old car removal. SA Wrecker’s junk car service also needs accurate vehicle details. If you are clearing an unused vehicle, our unwanted car removal page provides a relevant starting point for an enquiry.
