A phone conversation can settle the broad outline of a car sale, but small details are easy to remember differently. A short written confirmation gives both sides something to check before pickup. This is a practical transaction checklist, not a substitute for any documents required for your particular sale.
Identify the vehicle and the parties
Record the buyer’s business details and your contact details using the buyer’s appropriate process. Identify the vehicle with its make, model and year, together with the identifier requested for the transaction. Check the details against the actual car rather than a saved advertisement for another vehicle.
If you are arranging the enquiry for someone else, explain who owns the car and who can complete the sale. Being able to open a garage or hold the keys does not by itself establish authority to sell.
Describe the package being sold
List significant included or excluded items. Spare wheels, roof racks, dash cameras and loose parts should not be left to assumption. If you agreed to retain something, have the buyer confirm how that affects the offer and the pickup arrangement.
Record known faults and missing parts accurately. The point is not to produce a mechanic’s report; it is to prevent a sale agreed for one condition becoming a collection of a different vehicle package.
Confirm price and collection terms
Ask whether the amount is final or subject to checking the disclosed condition. Confirm the payment method and when payment will be completed. Include any agreed charges rather than treating “free pickup” as a complete explanation of unusual access work.
Add the pickup address, collection window and person meeting the driver. Where the car is at a workshop, the release contact and business hours matter as much as your own availability.
Keep the handover record
Retain the transaction confirmation and receipt, and check current South Australian vehicle transaction guidance for registration and disposal steps that apply. Ask Service SA if your circumstances are unclear.
Use this checklist when approaching cash for cars buyers, assessing a used car sale or choosing to sell your car for cash. It also helps with an unwanted car sale and the collection of an unregistered car.
