Seeing a similar car advertised for more than your offer can be frustrating. Before deciding that the offer is wrong, check what the two figures represent. An advertisement shows what a seller hopes to receive. A direct offer describes what a particular buyer is prepared to pay under stated conditions.
Match the vehicle before matching the number
Compare the model variant, year, kilometres and condition. Two cars with the same badge can have different engines, transmissions, equipment and damage. A tidy running example advertised privately is a poor comparison for a non-running car with missing components.
Also check whether the listing is a dealer advertisement or a private sale. Its preparation and sales arrangement may differ from a buyer collecting your car as it stands. A large number in an advertisement is not evidence that the car has sold for that amount.
Compare the work required
A private asking price may involve cleaning, photographs, answering enquiries and waiting for an inspection. It may also invite negotiation. A collection offer may involve less owner preparation, but its conditions still need to be clear.
Write down any costs you would incur for each route. Use your own quotes for repairs or transport, rather than adding an assumed industry average. Time matters too: consider whether you can manage inspections and how long you can keep the vehicle where it is.
Ask what could change the offer
Is the figure based on your description, photographs or an inspection? Does it include collection? Which missing parts or access problems could require a new assessment? Get those answers before relying on the initial amount.
For example, a quoted complete car and a car with its wheels later removed are different sale packages. The comparison should use the same package and condition.
Choose a route that suits the actual car
SA Wrecker offers cash for cars in Adelaide. If you have a used vehicle, compare the direct offer with a realistic private sale plan. Our sell cars for cash page explains the enquiry route.
For an unwanted car, collection and your deadline may carry more weight. With an unregistered vehicle, ask about pickup and check current Service SA requirements before arranging any road movement.
