Selling a car while it is at a repairer can save another relocation, but the workshop must be part of the collection plan. The owner, buyer and repairer need a shared understanding of what is being released, who can authorise it and when access is available.
Speak to the repairer first
Ask who handles vehicle releases and what needs to be completed before collection. Confirm any account or storage arrangements directly with the business. Do not tell a buyer that the car is ready for pickup until the repairer confirms it.
Give the workshop the collection business details through an appropriate channel once a sale and booking are agreed. Ask whether the driver needs to report to reception or a particular yard entrance.
Check the current vehicle state
A car booked in for diagnosis may now have parts removed or loose components stored nearby. Ask the repairer for an accurate description of what is fitted and what accompanies the vehicle. Tell the buyer about its rolling and steering condition where known.
Do not assume the car is still in the condition shown in photographs taken before diagnosis. Request current information when the work has changed it.
Coordinate keys, parts and access
Identify where keys are held and who will hand over included components. List loose parts so they are not left behind or mistaken for another customer’s items. Ask the buyer which items it can accept with the collection.
Provide workshop operating hours and any loading restrictions. Your availability may extend into the evening while the repairer’s yard closes earlier; the booking must fit both.
Confirm the final arrangement
Record the pickup address, entrance, workshop contact and collection window. Explain whether you will attend and ask the buyer about any requirements for completing the sale through an authorised representative.
If diagnosis continues or the release plan changes, tell the buyer before the truck arrives. Keep the sale confirmation separate from the repairer’s own paperwork and retain both records.
SA Wrecker’s broken car buying service can discuss the vehicle as described. A wider damage assessment is available through cash for damaged cars. Our damaged car removal page is relevant when arranging an assessed pickup from a workshop.
