A major engine or transmission problem can overshadow the smaller issues you already knew about. A buyer still needs a complete description. Listing the main fault alongside other known damage helps the assessment reflect the whole car rather than one isolated component.
Start with confirmed findings
Summarise diagnoses from workshop records and state whether the proposed work was completed. Include the date where useful. Do not turn a repair estimate into a claim that the car has been fully checked.
If a professional advised that the vehicle should not be operated, tell the buyer. You do not need to test it again to make the list more detailed.
Add your observations
Record known body damage, broken glass, interior condition and recurring symptoms. Use factual wording: a warning displayed, a component missing, or a problem previously noticed. Avoid guessing the mechanical cause when it has not been checked.
Include an item as unknown if you cannot verify it. An honest gap in information is more useful than a confident but unsupported answer on a quote form.
Keep condition separate from collection
Explain whether the vehicle has keys, fitted wheels and any known rolling or steering restrictions. Add its current parking position and access route. These facts may affect collection even where the buyer is already willing to assess a non-running car.
If it is at a workshop, ask whether diagnosis has changed its completeness. Loose parts and fitted components should be identified separately.
Use the same list for every offer
Comparing offers is easier when each buyer receives the same information. Keep a dated copy of the fault list and photographs. Update every active enquiry if parts are removed, a new problem becomes known or the car moves.
Ask which checks the buyer still needs before confirming an amount. An offer based only on the largest fault may not describe the complete vehicle package.
SA Wrecker’s cash for broken cars service provides an enquiry route for faulty vehicles. A broader condition list also helps our damaged car buyers. If the car needs collecting, discuss damaged car removal using the same dated description and current access details.
