A car may start while still having problems that affect whether it should be driven. For a sale enquiry, describe the engine behaviour and the wider vehicle condition separately. Do not assume starting the car proves its safety or suitability for a trip to a buyer.
Explain what you actually know
Say when it last started and whether it has been assessed since the fault or damage occurred. Include advice from a repairer where available. If the brakes, steering, suspension or another system has a known problem, disclose that independently of the engine’s running status.
Do not conduct a road test to answer a quote question if the car may be unsafe. Ask a suitable professional about any unresolved condition issue.
Describe mobility for collection
The operator may need to know whether the vehicle rolls, steers and has fitted wheels. Give existing observations and records; do not move the vehicle just to prove a point. State which features cannot currently be verified.
Tell the buyer about missing keys, locked wheels or a confined parking position. Those collection facts can matter even when the engine starts normally.
Confirm transport rather than assume it
Ask whether collection is available for the car as described and whether the offer includes it. If you intend any road movement, check the vehicle’s status and the current requirements with Service SA, as well as its assessed condition.
An advertising phrase such as “drive it in” should not override a professional’s advice about your individual vehicle. The collection plan should reflect its current limitations.
Keep the sale description consistent
Use wording such as “starts, but has the following known faults” rather than simply “running”. If a workshop later identifies more damage, update the buyer before accepting or confirming pickup.
SA Wrecker can discuss cash for broken cars without requiring you to present a fault as resolved. Our cash for damaged cars service also assesses broader condition issues. For transport, contact the damaged car removal team with the current condition, location and access requirements.
