A car that sometimes starts or drives can be harder to describe than one that clearly does not run. Calling it “running” without explaining the recurring problem may mislead a buyer and complicate collection. Give a short timeline of the behaviour you know about.
Record the pattern without diagnosing it
State what happened, when it happened and whether a professional has assessed it. For example, distinguish an occasional starting failure from a vehicle that stopped during use. Mention warning messages you actually observed rather than interpreting them as proof of a particular failed component.
You do not need to reproduce the fault for a quote. Avoid test drives or repeated operation where the vehicle may be unsafe. Follow the advice already given by an appropriate professional.
State its present condition
Tell the buyer whether it is currently parked and when it last operated. If you cannot check it safely, say its current running condition is unverified. “It started yesterday but has a recurring fault” is clearer than “runs fine”.
Include known wheel, steering and access restrictions separately. A vehicle that starts is not automatically suitable to be driven to the buyer or moved without an assessment.
Share useful records
If a workshop inspected the problem, provide a relevant summary. Identify whether it found a cause, suggested further checks or could not reproduce the issue. Preserve that distinction when discussing the car’s condition.
A previous repair invoice is useful context, but it does not prove the current fault has been resolved. Tell the buyer if the symptoms returned after the work.
Clarify how the offer handles uncertainty
Ask whether the buyer is assessing the car with the intermittent fault disclosed, and what checks remain before a final amount is agreed. Confirm collection as part of the arrangement rather than assuming the car can be driven on the day.
You can enquire through SA Wrecker’s cash for broken cars service. For a vehicle with several condition issues, cash for damaged cars is also relevant. Our damaged car removal service can discuss collection suitability using the actual vehicle condition and access information.
